Show Jumping

Speed, Precision, and Spectacular Athleticism
What Is Show Jumping?
Show Jumping is a dynamic and highly technical equestrian discipline where horse and rider are challenged to complete a course of obstacles in a ring. While speed and precision are key elements, Show Jumping encompasses far more than just racing against the clock.
Courses are designed with varying levels of complexity and require not only athleticism and bravery from the horse but also tactical thinking, rhythm control, and exact timing from the rider. Each jump presents a unique challenge — from verticals and oxers to combinations and related distances — testing the trust and communication between horse and rider.
Types of Rounds
Show Jumping includes various formats, each testing different skills:
- Single Round (Table A): Riders aim for a clear round; time may or may not apply.
- Jump-Off: Used when multiple riders go clear — fastest clear in a shortened course wins.
- Two-Phase: Two connected sections — riders continue into a second round if fault-free in the first.
- Accumulator: Points are earned per obstacle; bonus for a final “joker” jump.
- Speed Class (Table C): Faults are converted into time, prioritizing speed over penalties.
- Special Classes: Derbies or novelty events may include natural fences and unique challenges.
Divisions & Classes
Show Jumping competitions are organized into divisions based on rider experience, horse age, and jump height:
- Junior / Children: For younger riders, often under 18, with adjusted course difficulty.
- Adult Amateur: For non-professional adults, usually with height limits.
- Open / Professional: No restrictions — often features top-level riders and horses.
- Pony Classes: Designed for smaller mounts, typically for younger or lighter riders.
- Young Horse Classes: Showcase developing horses, often judged with education in mind.
- Height Divisions: From cross poles to 1.40m — riders select based on skill level and horse ability.
Each class is crafted to ensure fair, exciting competition and safe progression through the sport.
