Endurance

Durability, Strategy, and the Spirit of the Long Ride

What Is Endurance?

Endurance riding is a true test of horse and rider, blending distance, pacing, and veterinary care into a demanding but rewarding sport.

Endurance is a long-distance riding discipline where horse and rider teams cover distances ranging from 20km to 160km. The goal isn’t just speed, but to finish with the horse in sound health. Riders must manage pace, terrain, and recovery times while navigating varied environments.

Vet Checks & Horse Welfare

A defining feature of endurance is the series of veterinary checks throughout the ride. These assess the horse’s pulse, hydration, soundness, and overall condition. A horse must pass every check to continue. Prioritising welfare makes this a highly disciplined and responsible sport.

Strategy & Training

Success in endurance relies heavily on preparation. Horses are conditioned through months of fitness work, and riders plan routes, rest stops, and hydration carefully. It’s a mental and physical challenge that rewards patience, knowledge, and a deep horse–rider connection.

Information

Endurance riding marked an exciting milestone in 2025 with the hosting of its first ZEF-approved event. This achievement represents an important step in the discipline’s development within Zimbabwe, and with growing interest from riders and officials alike, Endurance is expected to continue expanding and strengthening its presence under the ZEF umbrella in the years ahead.
